(P L )Prior to the US, UK and French strike on Syria at dawn Saturday, China called on all parties concerned through its ambassador to the UN, Ma Zhaoxu, to remain calm and exercise restraint over the situation in Syria.
He described it as perilous, adding that it’s at a crossroads of war and peace.

Addressing a special session of the UN Security Council called for by Russia, he Chinese Ambassador urged the solve the issue peacefully through consultation and dialogue.

At this critical juncture, the Security Council should take up its responsibilities to build unity and consensus and do its utmost to prevent war, he said.

‘Unilaterally taking military action by circumventing the Security Council is inconsistent with the principles and purposes of the UN Charter and runs counter to the norms of international law and those governing international relations,’ the leading diplomat said.

However, Washington, London and Paris ignored the UN and launched a combined air strike with missiles on several sites including the international airport outside Damascus and a scientific research center close to the Syrian capital, both civilian facilities.

Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity should be respected, Ma stressed.

The situation in Syria has a bearing on regional and global peace and stability, has a bearing on the credibility and authority of the Security Council, said Ma, adding that China is ready to work tirelessly for peace and security in the Middle East and the world at large.
