US-Cuba talks seek inroads on health cooperation: Havana

Posted on by Greta Jean

HAVANA: Cuba and the United States held talks this week on broadening bilateral cooperation on health matters, including joint efforts to contain Zika, dengue and chikungunya viruses, Havana said on Saturday.

Health authorities from both nations met in Washington over five days for talks which ended on Friday, Cuba’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

Officials also discussed the fight against non-transmissible illnesses such as cancer, diabetes and hypertension, and identified areas of possible future cooperation, including research on aging and mental health.

The health talks followed a historic visit to Cuba last month by US President Barack Obama, as the two nations continue the process of normalizing relations after decades of hostility.
