The majority of Israelis are against ending the 50-year occupation of the Palestinian West Bank, a poll released Tuesday showed, which also found that most Israelis want full control over the city of Jerusalem, while Palestinians want its east side as their capital.
“Most of these people had taken shelter in this building from the fighting and the planes. They were hiding for their lives,” said one witness.
Reports emerged Wednesday that U.S. planes bombed a school sheltering displaced civilians just west of the Syrian town of Raqqa, killing an estimated 33 civilians.

The United Nations-backed strategy for the reconstruction of Gaza following the 2014 offensive by Israel has been dubbed a failure by the international charity Oxfam. An investigation released Wednesday revealed that the strategy “is failing to meet the needs of 1.8 million Palestinians in Gaza” and instead is worsening Gaza’s already dire water and sanitation crisis.
Palestinian leaders have expressed support for Rima Khalaf, a senior U.N. official who resigned Friday over the withdrawal of her agency’s report accusing Israel of creating an apartheid state, with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas awarding her his government’s highest honor.
Abbas spoke to Khalaf by phone, local media reported Saturday, and had given her Palestine’s Medal of the Highest Honor in recognition of her “courage and support” for Palestinians.
A statement by the Palestinian presidency said Abbas “stressed to Dr. Khalaf that our people appreciate her humanitarian and national position”.
The leader of the Lebanese Hezbollah movement denounced the United Nations on Saturday as weak after the withdrawal of a report accusing Israel of imposing an “apartheid regime” on Palestinians.
