The text highlights the historic ties between Cuba and Egypt, as well as Havana’s stance in favor of the Arab causes at international forums, mainly in support of Palestine.
Cuba has always defended the Palestinian cause, in addition to welcoming thousands of Palestinians who study in its universities free of charge. On the other hand, it has repeatedly opposed the annexation of Syria’s Golan Heights by Israel,’ the article underlines.
According to Gaballa, those honorable stances by Cubans are deeply rooted in the minds of Egyptians and Arabs in general.
Now it is time to return to the Cuban friends the part that they have given us, to stand by them at these difficult times they are going through and, together, to stand up to the radical policies promoted by the Donald Trump administration, supported by personages like Marco Rubio, John Bolton and Mauricio Clavier, Al Ahram notes.
The newspaper recalls that on December 17, 2014, then US President Barack Obama admitted the failure of Washington’s traditional policy on Cuba and committed to participating in a debate in Congress to lift the embargo.
According to the publication, ‘President Trump has now reversed that progress, but the question is how will Trump be able to overthrow and humiliate the Cuban Revolution if all his predecessors have tried and failed?’
The article gradually explains that in 2916, the US Department of Treasury made several modifications to trade regulations on Cuba, and although they are considered positive steps, they were not enough, because there are still major obstacles to implement those measures.
For example, Gaballa says in his article, in the sector of travels: visits by US citizens to Cuba were authorized by virtue of a general license in 12 categories allowed by law, regular flights between Cuba and the United States were resumed, and maritime passenger transportation was allowed.
However, the prohibitions for US citizens to travel freely to Cuba continue, according to US law, the article points out.
Al Ahram adds that the main damage caused by the blockade to the Cuban people is in the sectors of telecommunications, trade and culture, among others.
On April 17, 2019, new measures were announced to further tighten the US aggression against Cuba through an economic, financial and commercial warfare, which has been supported, in a greater or lesser extent, by successive US administrations since the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, the article underlines.
It explains that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned that Washington will enforce all restrictions contained in Title III of the Helms-Burton Act, which extraterritorially violates the sovereignty of third States interested in doing business with Cuba.
After all, what is left to do in light of Cuba’s unbreakable people, who strive to have a free, stable, independent and dignified life? That is not the intensity, Cuba deserves a pause, as any other friend at a time of anguish, Gaballa concludes in his article.
Linked to Al-Ahram since 1981, Kamal Gaballa currently works as a columnist and editor-in-chief of the newspaper. He also heads the Egypt-Cuba Friendship Association.
