The Congress of South African Trade Unions has noted with deep contempt the recent attempts to use South African territory for propaganda to attempts to destabilize Venezuela. We have watched with keen interest the developments in Venezuela and around the world, where opposition has been running a twitter revolution to promote their propaganda and the harassment of innocent citizens and public figures.

We note with great concern the developments currently in South Africa with the fake reports and fake news trying to convince the world that South Africans support the offensive against the current government of Venezuela. On the contrary, we want to state it categorically clear that such news are ridiculously false. We are clear, based on our strong historical ties with Venezuela and our resolve as progressives that we will support the progressive people and government of Venezuela both in word and in action.

We will not allow incidences similar to the fake protest claimed to have been in Durban at the non existing embassy of Venezuela there to ever fly again. As for the planned protest against the Venezuelan Government, backed and funded by the imperialist powers, it will not fly. This will not happen here, not in our back yard. We call on the South African Government to look into this and nip it in the bud before it goes any further. These attempts are cause for concern and threaten peace and security within South Africa; they cannot be left to continue.

We urge the media to practice good journalism by reporting accurate and true stories about the developments in Venezuela and elsewhere, including checking their facts. They must stop the cut and paste that currently being done by some media houses. We call on all progressive organizations to join the call condemning the attempts of the imperialist powers using opposition and NGOs for regime change. We call on all progressives to join us in solidarity with the people and government of Venezuela.
COSATU will be staging a picket at the UN Offices in Francis Baard in Pretoria on the 18th May 2017 at 10am-12pm in support of the progressive people and government of Venezuela.
